What Is Real Meditation? Understanding Meditation Beyond Technique

Many people think meditation means controlling the mind, stopping thoughts, or concentrating on something. But real meditation is not an action—it is a state of awareness.

Real meditation is the art of being aware of whatever is happening, inside and outside you, exactly as it is.

Outside awareness means being conscious of what you hear, see, or feel through touch.

Inside awareness means noticing thoughts, emotions, sensations, and inner movements.

In meditation, we simply observe.

No explaining.

No naming.

No judging.

No reacting.

This observation happens without using the mind. Awareness remains, but commentary stops.

For example, when anger arises, meditation does not mean suppressing it or expressing it. It means feeling anger completely, without saying anything mentally like “this is bad” or “I should not feel this.” You allow it to come, stay, and go. You remain silent inside.

At the same time, the body is still, relaxed, and grounded. When body and mind stop reacting, a deep calm naturally appears. This calmness is not created—it is revealed.

Meditation: A State Like Conscious Deep Sleep

Imagine a state like deep sleep—no dreams, no thoughts—but with full awareness.

That is meditation.

However, directly entering this state is difficult in the beginning. Silencing the mind is one of the hardest things for a human being. That is why practice is essential.

How Meditation Naturally Happens

Meditation grows through understanding and simple practice, not force.

A very effective beginning is:

Observing the natural breath Relaxing the body Allowing breath to be effortless

At first, thoughts may increase. This is normal. The key is equanimity—allowing thoughts to come and go without involvement.

Slowly:

Thoughts become fewer Gaps between thoughts increase Inner silence is no longer disturbed, even if a thought appears

At this point, meditation is happening on its own.

Even 5 minutes daily, practiced with sincerity, brings clarity, calmness, and deeper understanding over time.
