How Deep Breathing Changed My Life at 17 | Unmani Yoga
A personal story of silence, stillness, and inner awakening
I still remember those days very clearly. I was 17 years old, studying my Bachelor’s degree at Trichandra Campus in Kathmandu. I lived in a small room with my brother and a friend. Three young students, simple life, simple space — yet that tiny room became the birthplace of my inner journey. I wasn’t chasing enlightenment.
I wasn’t trying to become a teacher. I was just following a few small disciplines. But those small disciplines changed my life completely.
The Night Discipline That Stabilized My Mind
No matter what happened during the day — studies, stress, friendships, problems — I had one strict rule:
Sleep at exactly 10:00 PM.
Every night followed the same ritual:
• Until 9:30 PM → bright light
• Until 9:50 PM → medium light
• Until 10:00 PM → dim light
• 10:00 PM → complete darkness
The body learned the rhythm.
The mind learned to slow down.
I didn’t know the science back then.
Today I understand: I was regulating my nervous system naturally.
Sleep became deep.
Thoughts became softer.
My mind started stabilizing.
And this happened simply because of discipline.

Mornings in Noble Silence
From the moment I woke up until 8:00 AM:
I did not speak.
Not to my brother.
Not to my friend.
Not to anyone.
Those silent mornings felt sacred.
Without conversation, the mind did not scatter outward. Awareness woke up gently. The day began from inside, not from noise.
Even today, I feel morning silence protects the mind.
Preparing the Body for Stillness
My routine was simple:
Drink water.
Empty the bowels.
Clean the body.
When the body is empty and light, sitting becomes natural. There is no discomfort, no heaviness — only ease.
At 17, I didn’t know yogic cleansing theory.
But I was instinctively preparing the body for meditation.
The Breath That Opened Everything
Then came the practice that transformed me.
I would sit in a meditative posture and breathe slowly, gently, naturally.
No forcing.
No controlling thoughts.
Just breathing… and watching.
I practiced for at least 15 minutes every morning.
Slowly I noticed changes:
• The body felt light
• Subtle energy moved inside
• Thoughts faded without struggle
I wasn’t fighting the mind.
The mind was settling on its own.
Moments of Pure Stillness
Sometimes the breath became so calm it paused naturally.
Not forced.
Not intentional.
It simply stopped.
30 seconds…
sometimes close to a minute…
In those moments there was only awareness.
No fear.
No thoughts.
No effort.
Only silence and presence.
At 17, I didn’t have spiritual vocabulary.
But I knew one truth:
Something deep inside me was awakening.
How This Routine Changed Me
From these simple daily habits:
✔ I became calmer
✔ I reacted less
✔ My thinking became clearer
✔ I felt connected to myself
And the most beautiful part?
I learned it from experience — not from books.
Discipline, silence, and breath became my teachers.
The Lesson I Carry Today
Looking back, I understand:
Transformation doesn’t always begin with complex techniques.
Sometimes it begins with:
• sleeping on time
• waking in silence
• cleansing the body
• sitting with the breath
When the breath slows, the mind becomes still.
When the mind becomes still, you meet your true self.
