Attention Between the Eyebrows: A Meditation into Light and Inner Silence By Unmani Yoga Retreat

Most of us live identified with thought—constantly planning, remembering, interpreting, and imagining.

Yet the instruction “let the mind be before thought” points to something far more subtle.

Before every thought arises, there is a gap—an instant of pure awareness. This awareness is not shaped by memory or imagination. It is open, silent, and untouched.

Meditation is the recognition of this space.

Rather than resisting thoughts, one begins to notice the stillness from which they emerge and into which they dissolve. This is the state called Unmani—the mind beyond mind.

Meditation is not an effort to silence the mind. It is the recognition of the silence that is already present beneath all thought.

Ancient yogic traditions offer many pathways into this awareness. One such instruction carries a profound simplicity:

“Bring attention between the eyebrows. Let the mind rest before thought. Let the form be filled with the essence of breath, rising to the crown of the head, and there dissolve into a shower of light.”

Within these few lines lies a complete inner journey—from concentration, to awareness, to boundless stillness.

The Third Eye: Attention Between the Eyebrows

The space between the eyebrows is known in yogic tradition as the Ajna Chakra, or the Third Eye center. It is associated with clarity, intuition, and inner perception beyond ordinary thinking.

When attention gently rests here, something subtle begins to shift. The scattered movement of the mind naturally starts to gather. Thoughts do not need to be suppressed; they simply lose their urgency. Awareness becomes quieter, clearer, more luminous.

There is no effort required. No strain. Simply rest attention in this space and allow experience to unfold as it is.

Before Thought: The Silent Mind

The instruction “let mind be before thought” points toward one of the deepest realizations in yoga.

Most people spend their lives identified with the constant movement of thinking. The mind continuously creates stories, judgments, plans, memories, and opinions.

Yet before every thought appears, there is a moment of pure awareness.

This awareness is silent and unchanging.

It exists before thought arises and remains after thought dissolves.

Meditation invites us to discover this silent presence.

Rather than trying to stop thoughts, we simply become aware of the stillness from which they emerge and into which they disappear.

In yogic philosophy, this state is known as Unmani—the state beyond the ordinary mind.

It is a condition of effortless awareness where clarity remains, but mental noise fades away.

Breath as Living Energy

In yogic understanding, breath is not merely a physical process. It is the expression of prana, the subtle life force that animates body and mind. When the instruction says, “let the form be filled with breath essence,” it invites a deeper sensitivity to breathing.

With each inhalation:

  • The body feels quietly energized
  • Awareness expands through every cell
  • Life is felt as something immediate and intimate

Breath becomes a bridge—connecting the physical form with subtle awareness.

Rising to the Crown

As awareness deepens, attention gently shifts upward toward the crown of the head, known as the Sahasrara Chakra. This center symbolizes expansion, unity, and the dissolution of separation. There is no force in this movement—only a natural rising of attention, as if awareness itself is drawn upward into vastness. Here, individuality begins to soften into something more universal

The shower of  light

“And there, shower as light.”

Light is the timeless symbol of consciousness—clear, radiant, and unbound.

At the crown, imagine or sense a field of luminous awareness opening above you. From this space, light gently descends through the body.

It is not imagined as external decoration, but as an inner experience of clarity spreading everywhere at once.

Feel it:

  • Dissolving tension
  • Softening mental noise
  • Clearing emotional heaviness
  • Restoring stillness and spaciousness

In this light, everything becomes transparent

A Simple Practice

You may explore this meditation for 10–20 minutes:

  1. Sit comfortably with a stable, upright spine.
  2. Let the body relax and the breath become natural.
  3. Bring gentle attention to the space between the eyebrows.
  4. Rest in the awareness that is present before thought.
  5. Feel each breath as subtle life energy filling the body.
  6. Allow awareness to rise naturally toward the crown.
  7. Sense or visualize a gentle shower of light descending through the body.
  8. Remain as silent awareness, without effort or direction.

The Essence

This practice is not about achieving a particular state. It is a gradual return—from thinking to witnessing, from effort to ease, from separation to wholeness.

The Third Eye gathers awareness.
The space before thought reveals silence.
The breath awakens life-energy.
The crown opens into expansiveness.
And light becomes the language of inner clarity.

In this unfolding, meditation ceases to be something you do.

It becomes what you are.
